Eric Webb: “Invest #93L was recently upgraded to Tropical Depression 4 (#TD4) by the NHC, as it has become much better organized since yesterday, w/ persistent, consolidated deep convection and a well-defined low-level vortex on an ASCAT pass from several hours ago. This marks the first time we've ever observed two tropical cyclones east of the Lesser Antilles in June; a likely harbinger of an active Atlantic Hurricane Season ahead.”

I know everyone has seen this Atlantic SST plot (or something like it) infinitely many times on their feed lately, but I still cannot get over how warm it is, especially in the extratropics. Unprecedented doesn’t even begin to describe what’s happening off the coast of Northern… pic.twitter.com/hlh7OoZl4Y— Eric Webb (@webberweather) June 21, 2023

Those statistics assume a "normal distribution", and the chart shows results for two reference periods: 1982-2011 and a more modern 1991-2020. The current observations are even more anomalous if you use the older climatology. However, "climatology" is losing its meaning lately..— Brian McNoldy (@BMcNoldy) June 21, 2023

Closely watching the situation in Benelux and western Germany. First real test for the preliminary AR-CHaMo tornado model 🌪️. Storms fired up in the area with the highest potential (shaded contours).
